True Yam (Dioscorea spp.) includes crops across a number of species within the genus, Dioscorea. We refer to these as true yams because they are distinct from sweet potatoes, which are often wrongly called yams.
The picture above and to the right is Dioscorea alata, and the purple variety is often called Ube.
The Utopian Seed Project is growing true yams for the first time in 2020, although board member Yanna Fishman grew Ube in 2019 with impressive yields. We are also excited to explore the culinary potential of such a high yielding plant!
