Mashua (Trapaeolum tuberosum) – a tuber forming nasturtium.
The Utopian Seed Project is growing mashua for the first time in 2020. We are testing a couple of varieties from William Whitson’s crop improvement work at Cultivariable. The biggest challenges for mashua in the Southeast are our hot summers and fall frosts, so we will be selecting for plants that cope with these conditions.
This is one of @cultivariable`s improved mashua varieties, shooting up quickly with leaves you may recognize.
Mashua is basically a tuber forming nasturtium. Nasturtium (Trapaeolum spp.). The common garden flower is often T. majus, but mashua is T. tuberosum.
We`re facing many of the same challenges that exist for many of the Andean root crops, the main one being short day tuber formation.
