African Potato Mint (Plectranthus rotundifolius) is one of a number of tuber forming mints (see also P. esculentus and Stachys officinalis). Primarily cultivated in West Africa and called country or native potato, this plant grows a dense ground cover of mint-like green growth and a large quantity of small potato like underground tubers. Considered a subsistence crop with permaculture potential.

OUR WORK

2020 is the first year The Utopian Seed Project is growing African Potato Mint, so watch this space and follow along with the Trial Notes via the blog!

The African Potato Mint has sprouted. A friend of The Utopian Seed Project, Mark Homesteader, sent us some starting stock of those tuber forming mint. The small tubers have been described as potato-like and the top growth makes a great ground cover. Mark has actually supplied @roughwoodseeds with some of his collection of perennials, so head over there if you`re interested in growing some yourself.
