American Groundnut (Apios americana)
Working with Dr. Blackmon’s 43 improved cultivars from LSU breeding program.
Madagascan Bambara Groundnuts are bushing up nicely.

I don't want to get too excited too soon, but the Bambara Groundnuts (Vigna subterranea) from Madagascar (courtesy of @nctomatoman and his daughter) are flowering.
It could just be a stress response, although the plants look healthy. This plant flowers above ground and then sends down a tap root to produce a seed underground, much like a peanut.
This variety came from Madagascar, where the bean is called voanjo bory, which in Malagasy translates to round bean or nut.

Some great culture and history from @comfortfarms on the Bambara Groundnuts. We're growing six varieties this year and look forward to sharing notes with other farmers.

I am the proud recipient of Vigna Subterranea Aka Bambara Groundnut, Congo Goober, Earth Pea, Ground bean or Hog Nut. The Bambara People from West Africa have been growing this indigenous crop for a very long time. In fact the name Bambara means unbeliever or infidel because they refused to accept Islam. I can only imagine the history tied up into these seeds for the Bambara people to exist in a world that was brutal during there cultural development. Today I carry on the legacy of those ancestors who were obstinate in their resolve to be a free people. I admire those qualities. In addition... The Bambara Nut is a great soil builder needing very little to give back to the earth as it will enrich the soil full of nitrogen in our beds that have been depleted of its nutrients. I'm currently participating in some Collard Greens Trials and the Bambara Nut will be the prelude to some of the rare and special Collards I will be growing on Comfort Farms. Once grown... We plan to use them as they have been used for centuries by the Bambara People... With soups and stews and roasted as a snack. Besides saving and showcasing a piece of ancient history. The Bambara Nut is rich in nutritional value with up to 25% protein, 65% carbs 5+% minerals. It is considered a complete food for optimal health and nutrition and is severely under utilized. I believe the Bambara nut can be used the same way we use purple hull peas and all the other cow peas that come from West Africa. In the right hands it could be part of our southern food ways culture. Can't wait to share the journey of these amazing seeds with my community.

The Bambara Groundnuts were getting all excited about moving to the #experimemtalfarm at @frannysfarm but then they checked the long term forecast and decided to stay inside a little longer... #bambaragroundnut #experimentalroots #temperatechallenges #donttrustmay #waitingformothersday
I got impatient and dug up a bambara groundnut plant. This is the Madagascan variety given to me by @nctomatoman, I've been speaking to a Malagasy agronomist about this important legume in Madagascar (where it is called voanjobory and grown in rotation with upland rice).
I'm pretty excited that we seem to have a harvestable crop, hopefully the beans are mature enough to be viable. Next comes tasting (@chefbjdennis!).

This is what 43 cultivars of groundnut (Apios americana) look like. I'm planting 3-4 tubers of each. Big thanks to Dr. Blackmon for maintaining and now donating his collection of improved cultivars.

One of 43 varieties of groundnut! 3 tubers of each variety planted today. 129 holes filled with the potential for something awesome @frannysfarm

It may look like a potato, but that's an American groundnut, a potato bean or an Indian potato - Apios americana. Growing wild in eastern America, apios is a protein rich but small tuber to be foraged. But what you see here is an improved cultivar that came from Dr. Blackmon and his work at LSU in the 80s. That's on of 43 of his strains we planted @frannysfarm

Sometimes peanuts are called groundnuts, which can be confusing. To help clarify, here is our little peanut helping out with the groundnut trial just one week before her first birthday. #apiosamericana #zoethepeanut #croptrials #experimentalroots
