Turmeric (Curcuma spp.) – turmeric is a well known spice used in cooking many Asian dishes, but is also used as a medicine and is considered an adaptogen. Most turmerics are Curcuma longa, but there are black turmerics (Curcuma caesia) which tend to be more medicinal than culinary. Turmeric is a tropical plant with a strong center of diversity in India. Along with ginger, turmeric is in the family Zingiberaceae and produces underground ‘fingers’ after a long growing season.

OUR WORK
The Utopian Seed Project is exploring a range of varieties of turmeric of different colors (reds, oranges, yellows, whites, greens, and blacks). One of the key components of our work with tropical perennials is to ensure that they can be grown in a sustainable way i.e. we want to produce our own propagation material (be it seeds or in this case viable roots). Yanna Fishman has worked with ginger and turmeric for many years and successfully cures the rhizomes and stores them over winter before re-sprouting again in early spring.

Happy New Year Chris!
My goodness this year went by in a flash. I just wanted to reach out and say hello to you and family. Caregiving for Mom went to greater heights when she fell and broke pelvis, ribs, and her hand in April. Sadly she had to make the move out of her home of 68 years. Wow, the accumulation was a lot to sort through. She is settled in a nursing home she has been on their board of directors and a volunteer for 35 yrs. My garden time was basically zilch since I had to take care of her care, house contents and sale of the home. That was a huge job, glad it was completed but so sad to know the home my father built is with a stranger. I look forward to 2022 growing season. I managed to maintain some temperate tropical-ginger, galagal and turmeric. I was hoping you can connect me to Yanna Fishman who works with these crops. I would like to explore the technique used to cure the rhizomes for storage.
I will be sending you some support soon. Maybe you can send me some plants to trial in Missouri. I will pay for shipping.
