Pigeon Pea (Cajanus cajan) aka Gandules aka Toor dal is a perennial legume that quickly grows into a tree! The seeds that form can be eaten green or dried and are the key ingredient in Indian dals. The plant is loved across the tropics and by permaculture designers who value it’s quick growing biomass and nitrogen fixation.

OUR WORK
2020 is The Utopian Seed Project’s first year working with Pigeon Peas. The seed came via board member, Brandon Ruiz, who harvested them from a Charlotte based Holiday Inn! If we are successful then there are many varieties to continue experimenting with.

Gandules aka Pigeon Pea (Cajanus cajan) is a tropical perennial legume that we can grow in North Carolina as a temperate annual. Gandules can grow into stout trees/shrubs under the right conditions, and produce abundant pods filled with edible, protein rich peas.
This video is part of a The Utopian Seed Project series called, Meet-the-Plant, where plant experts introduce you to less known plants (in North Carolina) that have food production potential.
In this video, @brujobrandon founder of @clthap (CLT Herbal Accessibility Project) and Utopian Seed Project board member, gives a historical, botanical and culinary overview of Gandules.

We`ve sown a lot of exciting seeds over the last few weeks and will be publishing a weekly garden journal for people who want a little more info beyond the Instagram shot!
There is a link in our profile that will take you to our first entry covering Moringa, Bambara Groundnuts and Toor Dal aka Gandules.

Gandules aka pigeon pea. The key legume in classic Indian dahls. Growing quickly (maybe too quickly). In tropical climates gandules grows as a short lived perennial into a nitrogen fixing tree. The leaves are used as fodder and mulch and the seeds as food.

Well, the internet said 2-3 weeks to germinate Cajanus cajan or Gandules (aka Pigeon Pea). This is 48hrs later... I`m hoping this early vigor will translate to early pod production. Typically the pigeon pea is grown as a short lived, fast growing perennial, producing massive biomass and edible pods and seeds (while fixing nitrogen). It`s the traditional pulse of Indian dahls, but is grown and loved across the tropics and subtropics.
Here`s to another year of growing tropical perennials as temperate annuals as we continue to diversity our food system.

Lots to be thankful for from yesterday`s Trial to Table Farm Feast, but very excited and grateful for everyone`s participation in the cowpea tasting. 24 varieties and lots of great feedback.
Immeasurably in appreciation of @brinedandcured @thechefsfarmer and @keiaishungry for their hard work and delicious contributions (pictured in the last photo with Dr. David Shields, who entertained and inspired us with tales of lost flavors, some elusive and some recaptured). #TrialToTable #farmfeast #croptrials #flavorisqueen #strengthindiversity #cowpeas #heirloomd #forgottenflavors @frannysfarm
If you woke up this morning and thought, "Hey I`ve never tried achira, groundnuts, taro, or 4 colors of sweet potato." Then you should maybe grab a ticket for tonight`s dinner and check out our Experimental Roots table.
If you woke up this morning and thought, "Hey, I`ve never had the chance to taste 24 different varieties of cowpea (some rare) before." Then tonight is your chance to right that wrong.
Sweet potato tamales wrapped in turmeric leaves, okra Kimchi, sweet potato sourdough, okra seed savory muffins, chicken tinga tacos (our corn, Franny`s heritage chickens), arrowroot pudding, Chayote fruit and shoots, sweet potato leaf chimmichuri... To name a few upcoming culinary experiences.
Still some tickets left. All funds to support our future trials. Link in our bio.
